Author Talk: Laura Sims, LOOKER
Tuesday 1/29 7:30 pm

Short Stories is proud to present author, and New Jersey resident, Laura Sims. She will discuss her debut novel, LOOKER. She will be in conversation with author Jon Michaud and she will be signing copies of her book afterwards.

A tightly-wound psychological thriller and a catalogue of voyeuristic pleasures, Laura Sims’s LOOKER is a debut novel that dissects our image-worshipping culture even as it hurtles to an eruptive, Hitchcockian climax.

Dead-end job, hostile ex-husband, money running out—common problems take on a sinister aspect when you’re left all alone. So is it a symptom of envy or some darker desire that drives a super-fan to hoard her favorite actress’s discarded things in a boarded-up room? And who’s to blame when every attempt at imitating the more confident woman’s strut ends in disaster? Life’s disappointments mount, and a morbid fixation becomes increasingly deranged. A casual encounter between the two women looms: what’s the worst that could happen at a summer block party?

With sparkling literary language and an arsenal of deadly thrills, LOOKER combines the bravura voice of Ottessa Moshfegh and the psychological fascinations of Paula Hawkins into an enormously entertaining tale for our media saturated era.
